May 2009 SLO Chalk Board – LASU Family Days

Posted by french on May 8, 2009

The emerald hills of 2 months ago have given way to the return of California Gold … ok,ok, the hills are browning! The drought has augmented and hastened this naturally occurring phenomenon. Places like Santa Barbara are now enduring the perils of wind & fire. Please be careful; as heat returns, so does increased traveling (vacations) and the chance that a boo-boo may happen. As in carpentry, measure twice, cut once … consider your actions and stay safe (and hopefully employed)! Find the latest newsletter, May 2009 SLO Chalk Board here.

Frazier Mud Slide 2008, “we lost a car!”

Posted by french on Apr 11, 2009

The Frazier Mud Slide of 2008 was a very memorable event. NO injuries, but minor problems from time to time … like, “we lost one of the dump cars over the side at Abernethy.” Well, that’s not quite what was said. Yes, I was listening on the radio. Our crew was on the other side of the mud slide, moving mud & debris to Wicopee (more of that later). On the radio the crew on the other side calls the dispatcher and says, “… our train is back together and we are ready for another load of mud.” The dispatcher says, “…what do you mean your train is back together? Did you set a car out?” The train crew says (chuckling), “…sort of, one of the dump cars went down the side of the mountain during dumping.”

Extended unemployment Benefits

Posted by Lou on Mar 5, 2009

rrbsealNew Economic Recovery Legislation Affects Railroad Retirement Annuitants and Railroad Workers

Good news for all of us running out of Rail Road Unemployment Benefits. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, signed by President Obama, spools us a little bit more hope into our wallets. As announced by the RRB perhaps from May 2009 on we will get a one time $250 and a 13 weeks extension for our Unemployment Benefits. There is a PDF-Document in my Download Section that gives you more information. On the RRB Phone Line are some information’s, too. The Number to call is (877) 772-5772. Not much information on that Tape but, hey, start to make more room in your Fridge. The Link to their Web Site is www.rrb.gov. Hope this information helps and let’s look forward for May.

The United States Department of Labor said : Extended Benefits are available to workers who have exhausted regular unemployment insurance benefits during periods of high unemployment. The basic Extended Benefits program provides up to 13 additional weeks of benefits when a State is experiencing high unemployment. Some States have also enacted a voluntary program to pay up to 7 additional weeks (20 weeks maximum) of Extended Benefits during periods of extremely high unemployment.

More Information avail at NELP, the National Employment Law Project, and from Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of Government. Don’t forget to visit the Kid’s Page, Nancy’s Grandaughter talks about her eating habbits. Somehow, if you can’t see anything on their Web Site click on the ‘Adjust Text Size Button’ – worked for me.

download-iconBack from my first trip. Bumped, of course. At last it was a very nice trip. I had a very nice Engineer with me who understands my situation (off work for a long time). We had some good talks and a nice trip. After staying in the Hotel for almost 24 hours I got a Dead Head (a company van brings you back to your home terminal instead of bringing a train back – usually to save time and money because there are too many crews away from the home terminal). Bumped 2 hours after arrival, that’s not too bad (if you are used to it). Thanks for the bumping guy to let me have my first trip – there are good bumpers out there and somehow everybody must make a living.

Anyway, time to start a little project on my homepage that I was planning a long time. During all this time with the Railroad I got a lot of Download able material that I want to share. You will understand that I am not responsible for the Content or Actually, but everything is hand picked and checked. Most of the Files are for the Roseville, CA Area, but many are working for other areas, too. I hope you find something useful out of it. The furlough File section will be much bigger in a few days. So, furlough followers, check often for more information that will / might save you a buck or give you more information to survive. As always, keep your feet on the tracks and be save.

Just follow the Download Button on the Top of the Page.

Update: The Downloads didn’t work. Fixed the problem, now everything should be fine. Thanks Pete for the hint.

German Railroad TV

Deutsche Bahn

Deutsche Bahn

‘My’ old German Railroad (Deutsche Bahn) has a very nice and unique Service : DeutscheBahnTV. Follow the Link and you are able to see the Live TV Station that shows everything about the DB. There are very interesting Stories all the time. Often there are Camera’s on the Engines so you can see the Live Ride through some of the most beautiful Areas of Germany. How’s about a nice Ride along the Rhine River from Cologne (Koeln) to Koblenz ? Also interesting Facts about the Cars and Locomotives. Of course it’s all in German, but the pictures/videos talk for themselves. I am usin Linux and watch the live Stream with VLC. There is also a Windows / OSX Version available. I am not sure if the Windows Media Player is able to show the content, but it should. If the link is not working for your Software / OS try to copy the link and paste it into the desired Application. Ok folks, now I am homesick and have to watch the latest show. For more information visit Deutsche Bahn TV. The Homepage of the Bahn is also available in english. Once you in the mood don’t forget to visit the Railion Homepage for the largest European freight railroad.
